Privacy Policy
The short version
Placie shows the people you choose your latest known location — and nothing more than it needs to do that.
- You're in control. Sharing is off until you turn it on, per circle. One tap turns it off. You can always see exactly who can see you.
- We collect the minimum. Your email, a display name, your location while sharing is on, and the device basics needed to make the app work.
- We keep it briefly. Your current location is overwritten by the next update and deleted when you stop sharing. While sharing is on we also keep a short location history, deleted after 24 hours.
- We never sell your data. No ads. No third-party analytics. Ever.
- Deleting is easy. Settings → Delete account and data wipes your data from our servers.
The full details are below. Questions? Email support@placie.net.
Who we are
Placie is a location sharing app for families and small groups of people who trust each other. This policy covers the Placie apps for iOS and Android and the Placie service at placie.net and location.placie.net.
If you have any question about this policy or your data, email us at support@placie.net. A real person reads it.
What we collect, and why
We collect only what the app needs to work. Here it is, all of it:
- Account info — your email address and a display name. The email signs you in; the display name is how your circle members see you on the map.
- Precise location. While sharing is on, your device sends your latest position (latitude, longitude, and accuracy) so the members of your circles can see where you are. Your location is shared only with circles you have joined, and only while you have sharing turned on for that circle. Placie shows your latest known location — it is not a constant tracking feed.
- Device info. The platform (iOS or Android), a push notification token so we can send you notifications, app and OS version, and internal user and device IDs that keep your account and devices linked correctly.
That's the whole list. In particular, we do not collect:
- Your contacts or address book
- Wi-Fi network names or Bluetooth identifiers
- Motion or sensor data
- Anything from advertising SDKs — there are none in the app
- Anything from third-party analytics SDKs — there are none either
We never sell your data — not location, not email, not anything. There are no ads in Placie and there never will be data sales to fund them.
A note on how location is stored today: your location is stored on our servers in readable form (not yet end-to-end encrypted) so the service can deliver it to your circle members. It is protected in transit by TLS, kept only as described in the retention table below, and never shared outside your circles.
How long we keep things
We keep data for as short a time as the feature allows:
| Data | How long we keep it |
|---|---|
| Current location | Until replaced by your next update, you turn sharing off, you leave the circle, or you delete your account |
| Location history | Recorded only while sharing is on; each entry is deleted after 24 hours (sooner if you delete your account) |
| Audit events (e.g. "sharing turned on", "member joined") | 90 days |
| Invites | Deleted 7 days after they expire |
| Device push tokens | Until you delete your account |
| Account (email, display name) | Until you delete your account |
You control who sees you
Placie is consent-first, by design:
- Sharing is opt-in, per circle. Nobody can turn on sharing for you. You enable it yourself, on your own device, for each circle separately.
- One tap to stop. Stop sharing instantly, any time. No dark patterns, no "are you sure?" mazes.
- You always know. The app shows a clear indicator whenever you're sharing, and a list of exactly who can see your location.
- You're notified. You get a notification when you're added to a circle and when sharing is enabled — no silent tracking, ever.
- You can leave. Leaving a circle removes your location from it immediately.
Deleting your data
You can delete your account and all of your data at any time:
- In the app: Settings → Delete account and data. After you confirm, your account, circle memberships, locations, and devices are deleted from our servers.
- By email: If you can't access the app, email support@placie.net from your account's email address and we'll delete it for you.
Full details are on our Delete account page.
Security
All traffic between the app and our servers — including live map updates — is encrypted in transit with TLS. Always.
Children
Placie is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, email support@placie.net and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update this page and the effective date at the top. If a change meaningfully affects how we handle your data, we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect.
