Terms of Service
Welcome to Placie. These terms are short on purpose — please actually read them.
Placie is not an emergency or safety service. It shows the latest known location a device has reported, which can be delayed, inaccurate, or missing. Never rely on Placie to locate someone in an emergency — contact your local emergency services.
1. Accepting these terms
By creating a Placie account or using the app, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, don't use Placie.
2. The service
Placie lets you share your latest known location with circles of people who have each chosen to join. That's it — no ads, no data sales, no tracking of anyone who hasn't opted in. Placie is operated by Snowfoundry.
Placie shows the latest known location a device has reported. It is not a guaranteed, continuous, real-time tracking feed. Locations can be delayed, stale, or unavailable — devices lose signal, batteries die, operating systems pause background updates. Do not rely on Placie for emergencies or for the safety of any person. We provide the service on a best-effort basis and don't guarantee availability or accuracy.
3. Who can use Placie
You must be at least 13 years old to create a Placie account. If you're under the age where you can agree to terms like these yourself where you live, a parent or guardian must agree for you. Placie is not directed at children under 13 and we don't knowingly collect their data — see the Privacy Policy.
4. Your account
- Give us accurate information when you sign up.
- Keep your login credentials safe — you're responsible for what happens under your account.
- Tell us at support@placie.net if you think someone else has accessed your account.
5. Acceptable use
Placie exists for consensual location sharing between people who trust each other. Consent is built into the product: every person turns on sharing themselves, on their own device, per circle — and can stop with one tap. You must respect that.
You must not:
- Use Placie to stalk, harass, coerce, or intimidate anyone.
- Track any person without their knowledge and ongoing consent. Someone agreeing once does not mean they agree forever — if they stop sharing, that's their answer.
- Pressure, trick, or force anyone into sharing their location, including by controlling their device or account.
- Create an account for someone else without their knowledge, or access someone else's account.
- Interfere with the service, probe or attack our infrastructure, or use the service to break any law.
If you misuse Placie to track or control another person, we will terminate your account. We build safety controls into the app — visible sharing indicators, notifications when sharing starts, a list of who can see you — and we take their circumvention seriously.
6. Your content
The content you provide is minimal: your display name, your circle names, and the location data your device sends while sharing is on. You own it. You give us permission to store and transmit it only as needed to run the service — deliver your location to your circles, send notifications, and so on — as described in our Privacy Policy.
7. Disclaimers and limits on liability
Plain-English first: Placie is a small, best-effort service. We work hard to keep it running and accurate, but we can't promise it always will be, and we can't accept unlimited liability for a free/consumer app. Here's the legal version:
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED — INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT LOCATIONS WILL BE ACCURATE, CURRENT, OR AVAILABLE, OR THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE.
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, PLACIE AND ITS OPERATORS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF DATA, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF (OR INABILITY TO USE) THE SERVICE — INCLUDING ANY DECISION MADE OR ACTION TAKEN IN RELIANCE ON A LOCATION SHOWN IN THE APP.
Some jurisdictions don't allow certain warranty exclusions or liability limits, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
8. App store terms
If you downloaded Placie from Apple's App Store, Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies to the app itself. Apple is not a party to these terms and is not responsible for the app or the service — providing support and handling any claims about the app is on us, not Apple. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you once you accept them.
If you downloaded Placie from Google Play, the Google Play Terms of Service also apply to the download. Google is not responsible for the service and is not a party to these terms.
9. Termination
You can stop using Placie at any time — deleting your account (Settings → Delete account and data) removes your data from our servers. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, especially the acceptable-use rules in section 5, or where required to protect other users. We may also discontinue the service; if we do, we'll give reasonable notice where we can.
10. Changes to these terms
If we change these terms, we'll update this page and the effective date. For meaningful changes we'll notify you in the app. Continuing to use Placie after a change means you accept the updated terms.
